After the lumber is read by the grade reader it goes through the trimmer. This works much like the sawmill trimmer. The grader can tell the computer, through their marks, to cut the board at either end. This allows an otherwise #1 board with a #3 defect on one end to be trimmed and graded as a #1 piece of lumber. Some small trimmed pieces and sawdust are sent to the hog where they are ground up and blown in with the shavings. Trimmed pieces or blocks as small as 2 feet are stacked by hand and sold to maximize the value of the wood. The lumber that remains after it is trimmed is then stamped.
