The dry lumber is know ready to be run througn the planer. The dry lumber has a rough texture and is discolored due to the drying process.
The planer machine mills away a thin layer of wood from all four sides of the lumber and leaves a smooth clean finish on the lumber. Because some of the wood is shaved off the actual size of the board is reduced. This is one reason why a 2x4 is not actually 2 in. thick and 4 inches wide. The shavings that are removed from the wood are drawn up by large fans and are blown to one of two places. The finished lumber is now ready to be graded.
